Route 66 Interpretive Center - Chandler, Oklahoma

Nestled in Chandler, Oklahoma—the self-proclaimed “Pecan Capital of the World”—the Route 66 Interpretive Center breathes new life into the Mother Road inside a beautifully restored 1937 WPA armory.

A Historic Building Reimagined

Constructed between 1935–37 by the Works Progress Administration for the Oklahoma National Guard, the armory served until 1971. After years of vacancy, it was reborn in 2007 as the Interpretive Center and now holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places (added in 1992).

Built with thick hand-chiseled sandstone, the structure was designed to withstand tornadoes . Its eastern wing originally contained gun bays, offices, classrooms, and a vaulted magazine, while the western section served as a drill hall, complete with a stage and even a small rifle range.

A Multimedia Mother Road Experience

This is far more than a static museum—it’s an immersive journey:

  • A signature “Mother Road” video experience takes visitors on a multimedia drive from the 1920s to today, featuring footage filmed from a vintage 1965 Ford Mustang.

  • Each viewing area uses themed seating—beds, diner stools, Model-T seats, and military jeep styles—to evoke different decades and roadside experiences.

  • Visitors relax while audio-visual installations and informational panels bring local Route 66 narratives into focus.

Gift Shop & Event Venue

The on-site gift shop features local artisan crafts, Native American artwork, Route 66 memorabilia, books, stickers, and magnets—perfect tokens to remember your visit.

The former drill hall doubles as a versatile event venue. With space for up to 320 guests—including kitchen facilities—it's popular for weddings, reunions, and community events.
