Stephenson Park - Edmond, Oklahoma

Located between South Boulevard, South Littler Avenue, and East 4th and 5th Streets, Stephenson Park stretches across roughly 3.6 acres and holds the title of Edmond’s oldest public park, established in 1892 as “South Park.” In 1934, it was renamed Stephenson Park to honor Fred M. Stephenson, City Manager from 1931 to 1937, following renovations led by the Civil Works Administration and WPA—including stone bridges, entrance signs, a rock garden, and croquet and tennis courts.

A Transformation for Today’s Community

In a sweeping $6.5–7 million renovation completed in 2023–2024, the City of Edmond completely reimagined the park while respectfully preserving its historic charm. Enhancements include a dramatic arched pavilion/stage with café-style seating, a larger grassy event lawn, improved stormwater management hidden underground, upgraded lighting, refreshed basketball courts, and over 50 new parking spaces along 4th Street.

Equally captivating is the new playground—featuring a space-themed climbing tower with spiraling tube slides, swings, and musical play stations—that pays homage to the park’s beloved 1960s rocket-ship slide. The original rocket slide has been thoughtfully preserved as a permanent art feature in the northeast corner, honoring generations of local memories.

Built for Connection & Events

Stephenson Park now functions as a versatile gathering place where community events flourish. Its pavilion and lawn easily transform into an amphitheater for concerts, festivals, family events, and casual relaxation. Proximity to the Edmond History Museum, nearby restaurants, and downtown amenities make it a central hub for everything from informal weekday strolls to organized events.

The park also hosts seasonal “Concerts in the Park” every Thursday evening from May through July, featuring local bands and music across genres in a laid-back outdoor setting.

Amenities That Matter

Stephenson Park offers a well-rounded set of amenities including:

  • A spacious playground with diverse play zones

  • A covered pavilion with seating and integration for performances

  • A regulation-sized basketball court

  • Open grassy areas ideal for sports or relaxation

  • Sidewalks, benches, picnic tables, water fountains, and restrooms

  • Ample parking on 4th Street plus street-side adjacent to the park

Neighborhood surveys and community input were integral to the redesign, ensuring the space meets the desires of Edmond residents and reflects the park’s legacy.

A Blend of History & Modernity

Stephenson Park stands as a testament to thoughtful urban revitalization—honoring historic landscapes, WPA-era stonework, vintage trees, and cherished playground icons while embracing contemporary site design, safety, and programming.
