Oklahoma Frontier Drug Store Museum - Guthrie, Oklahoma

Nestled in the heart of the charming and historic downtown Guthrie—the first capital of Oklahoma Territory—the Oklahoma Frontier Drugstore Museum offers a captivating glimpse into a time when drugstores were not just for prescriptions but social hubs blending chemistry, community, and curiosity.

A Step Back in Time

Located in the Gaffney Building, constructed in 1890, this very site sheltered Guthrie’s first official drugstore right after the Land Run of 1889. The museum itself came to life in 1992, thanks to Ralph Enix and the Oklahoma Pharmacy Heritage Foundation.

Walking in feels like entering a late-19th-century time capsule: towering shelves hold thousands of glass bottles, tins and containers—some still containing their original contents. Old pharmaceutical equipment, erlenmeyers, label-stamped drawers, and dusty ledgers tell tales of early medicine.

Soda Fountains & Strange Cures

Among the treasures is a working 1923 soda fountain—complete with marble-sealed "pop" bottles and a classic ice cream parlor setup. On special occasions, visitors can even sample retro-style sarsaparilla or cream soda as it was originally served.

But the museum isn’t all nostalgia—it also contains a reproduction of a frontier-era dentist’s chair, eerily reminiscent of a medieval torture device, offering insight into just how rough dental practices once were.

The Apothecary Garden

Outside, the Apothecary Garden (added in 2006) showcases the medicinal flora settlers and Native Americans used for healing: echinacea, calendula, and other therapeutic plants thrive in well-tended beds. It's a living classroom demonstrating the roots of herbal medicine that complement what’s inside.

Why Visit?

  • Historic authenticity: This is more than a museum—it’s a fully restored drugstore that breathes life into turn-of-the-century pharmacy practice.

  • Great for families & educators: The combo of vintage artifacts, hands-on exhibits (like soda fountain tastings), and a botanical garden makes it engaging for curious minds of all ages.

  • Cultural connection: Perfect for complementing a walk through Guthrie’s National Historic Landmark district, rich in Victorian and Romanesque architecture from the 1889–1910 era, and near sights like the Territorial Museum and Carnegie Library

Whether you're drawn by antique medicine, curious to sip a vintage soda, or simply love living history, the Oklahoma Frontier Drugstore Museum is a hidden gem in Guthrie's historic downtown. It uniquely bridges the gap between medical history and everyday life on the American frontier.
