Historical Background
Little Axe, situated in eastern Cleveland County near Norman, has deep roots tied to the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. In the late 19th century, the Big Jim Band of Absentee Shawnees settled in this area, seeking to preserve their cultural traditions amidst increasing pressures to assimilate. The community, known as the Big Jim Settlement, became a focal point for the tribe's efforts to maintain their heritage. Over time, the area evolved into what is now known as Little Axe.
The construction of Lake Thunderbird in the 1960s led to the displacement of many families in the region. In response, the Little Axe Reunion Committee was established in 1968 to reconnect displaced residents and preserve the community's history.
