Shawnee Little Theatre Inc - Shawnee, Oklahoma

Nestled at 1829 N Airport Drive in Shawnee, OK, Shawnee Little Theatre (SLT) has been the region’s cultural heartbeat since its founding in 1967 by two college students and their drama teacher. What began as a passionate summer project soon transformed into a thriving, all-volunteer theater company, producing 4 to 6 live performances each year.

A Rich and Ongoing Legacy

In its earliest years, SLT performed in parish halls and community rooms. By 1970, the company secured a converted former doctor’s office as its first permanent home—an intimate 80-seat, two-quarter-round theater. Between 1975 and 1976, a remarkable community-driven campaign involving bake sales, dinners, and creative fundraising—even attracting a visit from Broadway legend Carol Channing—raised $150,000. This effort led to the construction of SLT’s current 200-seat auditorium in 1976, built on city-leased land for just $100 per year.

Excellence in Production and Impact

SLT stands among Oklahoma’s most acclaimed community theaters, celebrated for its high-quality set design and production standards. Remarkably, the theatre operates entirely through volunteer efforts—evidenced by recent IRS filings showing approximately $142K in revenue, $124K in expenses, and assets totaling $834K, all maintained without paid staff.

What Makes SLT Special

This theatre isn’t just a performance venue—it’s a place where generations connect, new performers find their wings, and local passion comes to life. The journey from humble parish halls to a full-scale auditorium highlights the remarkable potential of grassroots community spirit.
